Who the route is for
The route is for people engaged to a British citizen, a settled person or someone with another qualifying status, who intend to marry or form a civil partnership in the UK.
Intention to marry
You need to show a genuine intention to marry within the period the visa allows. Concrete plans carry more weight than a general statement.
- Correspondence with a register office or venue
- Bookings, deposits or invitations
- Evidence that both of you are free to marry
Relationship evidence
The Home Office expects to see that the relationship is genuine and that you have met in person. Evidence often includes photographs, travel records and communication over time.
Financial, accommodation and English language requirements
A fiancé application is assessed against requirements similar to other partner applications, including finances, adequate accommodation and English language.
Application process
Most applications are made online, followed by an identity and biometrics step. What happens in between depends on where you apply from and what the route requires.
- Confirm the route that fits your circumstances
- Check each requirement against your situation
- Gather and organise the supporting documents
- Complete the online application and pay the relevant fees
- Attend a biometrics appointment or complete identity checks
- Wait for the decision and respond to any request for more information
Marriage in the UK
The visa is granted for a short, fixed period, and the ceremony needs to take place within it. Work is not normally permitted on a fiancé visa.
Moving to spouse status after marriage
After the ceremony you apply from inside the UK for permission to stay as a spouse. That is a separate application with its own evidence and fees, so plan for both stages from the start.
Spouse visa helpApplying from Albania or Kosovo
Applicants based in Albania or Kosovo can get help preparing the application and understanding the evidence relevant to their circumstances.
Documents not issued in English may need to meet applicable translation requirements.
Refusals
If an earlier application was refused, or there is a problem in your immigration history, it is important to understand the reasons given before deciding what to do next.
A new application that does not deal with those reasons is likely to meet the same result.
